Background

Necessities for Children is a non-profit organization that seeks to help underprivileged children through education and tangible assistance in the forms of food, clothing, and healthcare. The organization’s main focus is helping disadvantaged children learn about technology and computer programming, providing critical skills for success in a tech-driven world.

Challenge

As Necessities for Children began to grow, and the purpose of the organization shifted from being a more general non-profit to one focused on tech education for children, they realized they were in need of an in-depth brand strategy, as well as a modern, professional brand identity to match the new direction.

We partnered with Necessities for Children to rebuild their brand positioning, messaging, and visual direction from the ground up. The challenge was to create a strategic framework that would allow the brand visuals to become more consistent with their mission, ensure the messaging was hitting home with the target demographic, and define a roadmap for the nonprofit moving forward.

Working with Artful Ruckus has been absolutely amazing and we are thrilled with our new identity design and brand strategy. I can't say enough about the valuable insights, expertise, and ongoing support that they've provided in order to help the Necessities for Children brand continue to grow.

Insights

During our two day brand strategy workshop with the founder of Necessities for Children, we uncovered a number of valuable insights that allowed us to discover the brand’s unique position in the crowded non-profit market, define key user personas, and outline some keywords that we could use to start shaping the visual direction.

For the visual direction, we set out to create a logo design and supporting brand identity that showcased the newly defined brand attributes. It was also important to ensure that this new visual approach appealed to our key user personas, as well as the children that interact with the organization.

Solution

Modern, community-oriented, and inspirational. Using the newly crafted brand strategy as our guide, we found ways to infuse the principles found within into every touch point of the brand.

The color palette and typography choices are trendy, bold, and eye-catching. Playful enough to appeal to the children the organization helps, but not to the point that the professionalism and trustworthiness of the brand is negatively affected.

When it came to visually portraying our attributes of community, connection, and inspiration, we had our “aha-moment” when looking through photos of the children and volunteers interacting at Necessities for Children’s events. That feeling of connection, inspiration, and togetherness is shared in a special moment between the parties, with a smile.

Seeing this, we knew that pursuing a logo design that incorporated this special moment would be a strong metaphor for the difference that the organization is making in lives of both the children and the volunteers.
